START WITH HOW YOU FEEL
What would help you today?
Choose a starting point. You can switch whenever you like, and there’s no need to describe your dream.
Enjoy the feeling of a pleasant dream, and take a moment to thank Allah.
Give thanks. You might simply say Alhamdulillah.
Share thoughtfully, if you wish. The hadith permits sharing a dream you like.
Keep your day grounded. Let the experience encourage gratitude and kindness; you don’t need to work out a hidden meaning.
Gratitude and sharing: Sahih al-Bukhari 6985
The final step is a practical reflection offered by this guide, rather than a quotation from the hadith.
AFTER AN UNSETTLING DREAM
You can leave the dream behind.
There’s no need to search for a prediction or tell us what happened. Islamic guidance gives you simple steps to respond and move on.
Seek refuge in Allah. Ask Allah for refuge from Shaytan, three times.
Lightly spit towards your left three times. Then turn onto your other side.
Let the details go. The guidance is to avoid retelling an upsetting dream.
Pray, if you wish. Offering prayer is also mentioned in the guidance.

Take your time. You don’t need to analyse the dream to follow these steps.

Explore guidance and common questions. These questions explain how to respond to dreams alongside the topic collection above.
What does Islam say about different dreams?
Dreams are not all the same. A hadith describes good dreams as glad tidings, dreams that upset a person, and dreams arising from one’s own thoughts. You do not need to decide which category a particular dream belongs to.
Sahih Muslim 2263a
Should I search for a meaning in every dream?
The hadith includes dreams arising from one’s own thoughts. This guide therefore encourages a simple response rather than assuming every detail needs an interpretation.
Sahih Muslim 2263a
What can I do after a lovely dream?
Thank Allah. You may share a dream you like, if you wish. There is no need to turn a pleasant experience into a prediction.
Sahih al-Bukhari 6985
Do I need to describe an upsetting dream?
No. The hadith advises against retelling a dream you dislike. You can follow the gentle steps above without writing down or sharing its details.
Sahih al-Bukhari 6985
What if I wake up feeling unsettled?
Seek refuge in Allah three times, lightly spit towards your left three times and turn onto your other side. You can then leave the details behind.
Sahih Muslim 2262
Is prayer mentioned after an upsetting dream?
Yes. Offering prayer is mentioned, along with avoiding retelling the dream. The guide above brings these steps together for easy reference.
Sahih Muslim 2263a
Which surahs are mentioned for bedtime?
Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas are mentioned in the Prophet’s bedtime practice. The routine above describes the recitation, cupped hands and wiping, repeated three times.
Sahih al-Bukhari 5017
Where do these answers come from?
The religious guidance here is paraphrased from the referenced narrations in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. Practical suggestions are offered as reflections, not as hadith quotations. Hadith collection names and reference numbers are provided for further reading.
Sahih Muslim 2263a

About this guide
This page combines 30 dream topics with Islamic guidance on responding to dreams and preparing for sleep. Four topics describe particular dreams recorded in hadith. The other 26 summarise selected, gentle associations from an online collection of traditional interpretations. Neither type determines the meaning of your own dream.
Traditional interpretations are not authenticated hadith or religious rulings. We have not independently established the collection’s attributions to early scholars, so we do not attribute these entries to Ibn Sirin. The selected associations are not an exhaustive account of everything in the sources. Practical reflections on gratitude and kindness are editorial suggestions.
The hadith examples include their collection and reference number. Hadith examples describe the specific narrated dream; they are not universal rules.
